The movie begins with a comet, Wolf-Biederman, discovered by a team of astronomers. Initially, the comet seems to be on a safe trajectory, but later calculations reveal it's on a catastrophic collision course with Earth. A team of scientists, led by Dr. Tom Baker (Robert Duvall), and a young journalist, Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni), work together to find a solution.
