The film takes place in Middle-earth, 60 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. The story follows Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a hobbit who lives a comfortable and quiet life in the Shire. They persuade Bilbo to join them on a quest to reclaim their treasure, which was stolen by the dragon Smaug.
