The film is set in the present day, where an alien named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) arrives on Earth in a giant spaceship that hovers above New York City. Klaatu is sent to Earth to assess humanity's worthiness to continue existing, as Earth's destructive tendencies pose a threat to the universe.
