The film begins with Pi's childhood in Pondicherry, India, where he grows up in a zoo owned by his father. After the family decides to leave India and start a new life in Canada, they set sail on a ship with some of their zoo animals. However, their journey is cut short when the ship sinks, and Pi finds himself alone on a lifeboat with a fierce Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
