The movie takes place a year after the events of the first film. Captain Jack Sparrow is struggling to find his footing on the high seas, while Lord Cutler Beckett, the head of the East India Trading Company, seeks to control the seas and eliminate piracy. Beckett obtains a magical compass that allows him to control the seas and sends the Kraken to destroy Jack's ship, the Black Pearl.
